The printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) process involves the following types of testing procedures to validate expected operations:
- Automated optical inspection (AOI)
- Absorbable organic halogen (AOX) testing
- Black box testing
- Functional testing (FCT)
- In-circuit testing (ICT)
- Smoke testing
- Regression testing
DEVA solves complex supply chain problems for electronics customers, offering a comprehensive selection of value-added services with turnkey capabilities. One of the many services we offer is PCBA testing.
This case study explores a project we worked on for a client in the healthcare industry, providing custom PCBA manufacturing, kitting, and testing according to UL standards.
PCBA Manufacturing and Kitting
At DEVA, our kitting process involves organizing various components into kits for assembling printed circuit boards (PCBs). To successfully turn a design file into a PCBA, we follow these stages of production:
- Design. We obtain the design files and schematics from the customer.
- Fabrication. Once the design is approved, it gets transferred to a blank PCB.
- Assembly. Components are mounted onto the PCB during the assembly stage and then soldered into place.
Project Details: Medical Board Assembly With PCBA Kitting and Custom Testing
With a proven reputation as a trusted PCBA supplier, DEVA was hired as a contract manufacturer for a healthcare industry client based in Colorado. We performed the following processes for their medical PCB assembly:
- PCBA kitting
- PCBA manufacturing
- Custom test fixturing
- Testing
With our contract manufacturing equipment, we used the following materials to assemble the PCBs according to customer schematics:
- Metals
- PCB
- PVC tubing
- Electronic components
After manufacturing, we tested the board assemblies for electrical functionality using Fluke test meters, which measure current, voltage, and resistance. Our team also inspected the air chambers and tubing to verify pressure retention. From initial prints to finished goods, we delivered the client’s first batch of PCBAs within 16 weeks.
Results
The customer was thrilled with the results, as we were able to successfully take the entire PCB assembly and testing process off the client’s production floor. This freed up valuable time and space for their other projects. For the next 10 years, DEVA produced and shipped 1,200 PCBs per year to the client until they discontinued the component. The success of this project highlights our ability to procure “unusual” parts, design and build custom test fixturing, and provide turnkey capabilities.
